Cyprus is steeped in ancient myth and legend and several places on the island have a particular mythological significance.

One of those is the Adonis Baths Water Falls in the Paphos area. A pretty spot, with water cascading into a tranquil and secluded pool, it is said to be the spot where lovers Adonis and Aphrodite spent much of their time. As such it has a reputation for bringing virility and long lasting youth to those who bathe in the waters. It is said that if you touch the waterside statue of Adonis and Aphrodite, you’ll be blessed with fertility, so it’s also a popular place to visit for those trying to conceive and want a little divine intervention.

Getting to Adonis Baths

Adonis Baths certainly isn’t the most accessible attraction on the island, so you need to be prepared. There is a road, but it is very rocky, and while you can get there in a car, it really isn’t advisable unless you’re in a proper off road vehicle. Instead you should think about hiring a motor bike or quad bike, or take an organised trip to the baths such as a Jeep safari. It may be a bumpy ride, but it’s worth the journey.

Take your time

After travelling along the winding roads, you’ll appreciate time to relax and unwind. There’s no need to rush here, it’s a place to take it easy and soak up the atmosphere. The emerald green waters and the seclusion of the spot really give it an otherworldly feel, as though you’ve stepped back to ancient times. But it’s also a place for having fun and there’s nothing quite like leaping from the rocks into the chilled water of the falls. It’s the perfect way to cool down when the Cyprus midday sun gets a little too hot. Because the baths are not so easily accessible, it rarely gets busy, and on occasion you may be lucky enough to have it all to yourselves, just like Adonis and Aphrodite!

More than just the waters

There’s more to see here too, so don’t just focus all your attentions on the baths themselves. There’s a small and rather quirky museum to explore, an array of interesting statues, a cafe for refreshments and some lovely walks in the surrounding area if you want to get out and stretch your legs.
