There’s so much to see and do in Ayia Napa itself, that many holiday makers simply never explore outside of the resort, but just outside of Ayia Napa are many beautiful traditional villages. Taking time to step away from the town and discover these tranquil villages is certainly very rewarding. Steeped in history, packed full of stunning architecture, there’s so much more to the area if you just take the time to travel a little further out. Here are five of the beautiful villages nearby that are definitely well worth a visit…

1. Frenaros

Frenaros is an inland village, roughly 16 km from Ayia Napa. There’s a real mixture of architecture here, from traditional stone houses and Byzantine churches, to more modern villas. Explore the winding streets and take time to check out the beautiful frescos in the Ayia Marina church.

2. Liopetri

liopetri

Liopetri is very picturesque. The fishing shelter overlooking the Liopetri River is the perfect place to take some photos. In this village you’ll find a memorial that marks the site of a battle between the British and Cypriot fighters in 1958. A visit to the mediaeval church of Panayia is very interesting too, and can be a welcome escape from the midday sun.

3. Deryneia

Deryneia is set in an agricultural area, and is famous for the most juicy delicious strawberries. If you’re visiting in May, then look out for the yearly strawberry festival which is a lot of fun. Also in Deryneia is a museum of folklore, giving you a great opportunity to learn more about ancient Cypriot traditions.

4. Paralimni

paralimni

Paralimni is a larger village and has a more modern vibe than the other villages we’ve mentioned, but this doesn’t make it any less beautiful or interesting. Set on the shores of a shallow lake, bird watchers will always find some great specimens to spot here, along with some rare species of snakes, toads and frogs. If shopping is more your style, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Paralimni also boasts a wide range of designer shops and boutiques. With plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants, you can easily spend the whole day in Paralimni. You’ll find this village 7 km from Ayia Napa, it’s on a good bus route, and there’s also a cycle path if you’re feeling energetic!

5. Sotira

sotira

Our final pick of villages close to Ayia Napa is the prettty village of Sotira. Around 12 km from the centre of Ayia Napa, you’ll find some beautiful churches set in the middle of the village. There are a few shops, and also some very good tavernas in the traditional style.
